Johan, tu fais du super boulot, j'adore la cymbale que tu m'as faite et je vais t'en envoyer d'autres (comme je te l'avais dit mais j'ai un peu de retard, j'ai du acheter une électro...). Maintenant, ce n'est que subjectif, la qualité de tes cymbale n'est pas de la qualité pour tout le monde et c'est très bien ainsi, j'ai pas trop envie qu'on se retrouvent tous avec des Johan's custom non plus...

Yes Dieze, I do a lot of self-promotion. But let me tell you something.
I've been hammering cymbals for 20 years now (that's about as long as Spizzichino). The difference is that until about 3 years ago, I never told people about it and I didn't do any promotion at all. So nobody knew about me, but everybody knows Spizzichino.

But finally some drummers convinced me to speak out about my work. At first I didn't want to do that, because, actually, I hate promotion and advertising.
But I'm now 42 years old so if I ever want to reach something I have no alternative than to speak about my work NOW.

However, if it was my intention to make big money with cymbals I would work differently: instead of using expensive cymbals from Zildjian/Sabian/Ufip as blanks for my creations, I would buy cheap Turkish blanks like Spizzichino does. If you buy large quantities of Turkish blanks you can get them almost for nothing, perhaps 15 to 30 euro for a 20 " blank. And then hammer the blanks and sell the cymbals for 500 euro. THAT'S making profit and being commercial.

But I don't want to use Turkish blanks because the quality of the alloy is very impure. Turkish bronze is made from old recycled electrical copper wire. Everybody knows that Turkish cymbals generally break much easier than Zildjian, Sabian or Ufip cymbals. So I don't want to sell cymbals that break easily. But Zildjian, Sabian or Ufip do not sell blanks, they only sell cymbals. So to get the best and most durable alloy I am obliged to buy their cymbals. I don't get any discount, cymbals cost me just as much as if you would buy them. So in all honesty I can tell you, my profit is very low. And when I hammer cymbals for other people, I do not even charge half of my hours. I can't continue working so cheap for much longer, but I have to do it to get my work known.

I cannot make promotion like a big company can. I cannot give endorsements for free to well-known drummers in return for promotion. I have no money to make publicity. So YES, I tell people about my work on forums. How would you do it? But I think my promotion is justified: I am proud of every cymbal I make. If I would make cymbals the way the big companies do it, I would NOT be proud because cymbals can sound much better if you spend MUCH more work on them.

But if you are so critical of the self-promotion of a guy like me who tries to make really good instruments all by himself, who spends about 20 times as much work on a cymbal than a big company does, but doesn't make much money, then why are you not sceptical about the fact that most of the musician-forums are actually just a part of the big machine that promotes the big companies ??? Your friend Ferid is part of that big commercial machine. But he bans a small guy like me who is passionate about making high-quality instruments but hardly makes a profit.

Think about that before you blindly believe what Ferid tells you.

Tiens j'ai une question qui me viens en écoutant une ride istanbul spécial edition que tu as retravaillé. C'est droles mais cette série de ride a vraiment un son tres particulier je trouve, et finallement on le retrouve dans le son meme apres ton travail. Une question me viens alors, est-ce que la cuisson et re re re cuisson puis écrasage du bronze puis le trempage dans l'eau froide, avant martellage jouent beaucoup sur le son ? C'est drole d'allieur car avant martellage les cymbales ont l'air tres molles et se retourne facillement. Mais alors pourquoi est-ce qu'elle durcissent ensuite ?

It's a pity you cannot hear the "before" sound, because it now sounds VERY different Before it sounded very hollow, with a bad stick response and the harmonics clashed.
But yes you can still recognize the Agop Sig sound because the typical sound of these Istanbul Agop Sigs has to do with the ultra low cup and the artificial patina. Both aspects make these cymbals sound very dry and subtle. A small and flat cup makes a cymbal more similar to a flatride.

Other types of Agops have a small cup too, that makes a gigantic difference for the total sound of the cymbal.

Oui c'est bien cette ride, on sent bien derriere le ping le son filandreux, enfin je sais pas comment dire, mais le grain typique de cette ride. C'est sur que ca n'a plus rien a voir niveau son, mais ca garde quelque chose, effectivement un peu genre flat ride. Donc ca viens de la cloche, d'accord Merci ^^

PS : pour ma crash je sais pas trop quand je te l'enverrai je suis en pleins concours en ce moment donc ...

franchemenbt ce férid est casse bonbon ou je me méprends? il y a deja eu des heurtes sur ladrummerie avec ce gars..

bin moi j'aime ce que fait Johan...
au début c'était beaucoup de trucs de jazz, pas ma tasse de thé, puis j'ai découvert des HH typés plus rock..
j'ai fini par envoyer une B8 pro..que j'osais pas taper tellement j'aimais pas le son..je me retrouve avec l'une de mes 4 crash principales, au milieu de 2 signature paiste, et d'une dimensions paiste... nickel plus sombre évidemment que mes Paiste, elle sonne terriblement bien.
c'est surtout porté jazz ce qu'il fait le johan...enfin voilà, pour 160 euros tout compris (achat de la B8, envoi par la poste a bruges, retour par la poste, martelage ..je me retrouve avec du fait main qui sonne comme j'aime!!!!!!!!).

quel est l'interet de Ferid de casser comme ça Johan?
mes oreilles aiment ce que j'entends sur le site de Johan..

Dieze c'est un clone de Ferid pour le dénigrement du boulot des autres.
On va lui filer des B8 Sabian et il sera tout content!!
ça sonne trop bien les cymbales d'usine bas de gamme,
carrément mieux que les même remartelées par johan

d'ailleurs j'avais entendu un HH qui me plait 'achement sur le site de Johan...
autant que le Paiste Twenty...à méditer.
(un HH typé rock, assez aigu, bien plus que la plupart martelé par Johan habituellement)

au fait, le sample mp3 du batteur qui a laissé son endorsement zildjian pour les cymbales de Johan..;bin ça sonne drolement bien (oui j'aime pas les cymbales typées jazz, mais forcée de reconnaitre quand le son colle à un style et que ça sonne!)

Personnellement je pense pas que de telles cymbales se confinent à un usage dans tel ou tel style ! (même si j'aurais tendance à dire que ça sonne très jazz, moi aussi — je comprends bien ce que tu veux dire, mais ta dernière remarque me fait tiquer malgré tout.) Les traditions, ça demande qu'à être renversé au profit de la créativité… Physiquement, rien ne t'empêche de jouer de telle ou telle manière sur telle ou telle assiette de bronze ; suffit de voir le nombre de batteurs rock qui ont adopté les Zildjian K.
Y a quelques jours, j'ai regardé un concert de Red Sparowes (du post-rock / post-metal), le batteur a un jeu comme j'aime, à la fois résolument « rock » et relativement complexe : il jouait sur des K et ça sonnait sa race !

(Don't take it personally, je crois que j'ai juste envie de crier mon amour pour la vie depuis que j'ai mes nouvelles crashes… Pour ma part, en tout cas, je suis de ce côté-là des cymbales, sijpuidir. )
